Our group (Karen, Alexandra and Tricia) decided to change our idea from pop (Mika) to Jazz. We decided that pop was to commercial and we hope that doing Jazz will stand out. We started researching Jazz artists and we decided to do Billie Holiday, who was before music videos.
Jazz
Jazz originated at the beginning 20th Century in African-American communities in the Southern United States from a mix of African and European music traditions. From its early development till now, jazz has incorporated music from the 19th and 20th century American Popular music.
Billie Holiday
Billie Holiday was an American jazz singer and songwriter. She was nicknamed Lady Day by her friend and musical partner Lester Young, Holiday was a seminal influence on jazz and pop singing. She only co-wrote a few songs but several of them have become jazz standards (God Bless the Child, Don’t Explain and Lady Sings the Blues). She also became famous for jazz standards written by others , including Easy Living and Strange Fruit. On May 31st 1959 she was taken to Metropolitan hospital in New York suffering from liver and heart disease. She was arrested for drug possession. She remained under police guard at the hospital till she died from cirrhosis of the liver. She died with only $0.70 in the bank and $750 (a tabloid fee) on her person.
6 October
A list of what everyone is doing:
Karen: Researching CD covers to find out the conventions of them.
Tricia: Finding Jazz magazines
Alexandra: Looking up Jazz websites. To look at the style, colour, ect.
Me: I am looking for a media pack.
8 October
I found a media pack on Smooth Jazz and it said that 57% of the people of listen to jazz are male and 43% are female. 60% of people are aged between 35-49. However we want to make our jazz music video appeal to a younger audience. We decided to aim it at a younger audience as older people are less likely to watch music videos or go on artist’s websites.
Today we wrote our questions for our questionnaire so tomorrow we’ll be able to go out and ask people. with a dictaphone.
9th October
Been collecting qualitative, primary research on our target audience. Tricia and Alexandra filmed on a camera, whilst me and Karen used a dictaphone. Alexandra is getting Q/A on the internet for quantitive research.
13 October
Over the weekend Karen asked about 10 people the questions we wrote up , she used a dictaphone to do this. Once these have been edited they will be posted on the blog.

Target Audience Analysis
Most of the people asked did not know who Billie Holiday was, with only 1 person recognising the name. Only person thought that image was important than the music, whilst 6 thought the music was more important, they thought this because the music is what you listen to. The people interviewed were drawn to CD cover if it was bright and colourful this were the most popular things said. Others things that drew them to a CD cover were if it was attractive, pretty and if it had a person around their age group on it. Most of the person’s interviewed did not like the Cd covers we showed them as they thought they were boring and did not stand out. However one person did like Adele’s one because the face was covered and the one they didn’t like was Joss Stone’s because of the tattoos. It was half and half on the question ‘Would the artist lifestyle put you off their music’. The people who said it wouldn’t say that it’s the music they listen to and 1 person said it would depend on their lifestyle. The people interviewed said to make jazz more popular their needs to be more exposure and they need to appeal to a younger audience. Also the songs need to be more fast. The most popular choice for a music video was a narrative. 4 of the interviewed people didn’t use artists websites, the 2 that did used them for updates or to see if they were making a new album. Most of the people expected to see the artist’s image on the front of the Cd cover. Most of the people expected to see the artist in the music video other things said were; instruments, a message and people dancing. They expected to see things about the songs on the website other things said were; reviews, music and albums. The most popular choice for watching music videos was YouTube.
All this will help me do my cd cover, website and music video because for the music video I will make sure the artist is used in the video and also make it a narrative. Also make sure the song we chose for it faster paced than most other jazz songs. For the CD cover I will make sure the artist appears on it and make sure it is attractive. For the website I will make sure there are reviews about the albums and songs and also that there songs will be on the website.
As the target audience want songs to be more pacer we decided to do a remix of one of Billie Holidays song. The song we decided to do was Gloomy Sunday. We then changed our mind and decided to a remix from Free the Robots. You let me down.

Also i have put the sheets we have filled out on the link to Flickr.
Textual Analysis
- For my textual analysis I chose to Amy Winehouse’s ‘Rehab’. The genre for this song is jazz, soul and r&b.
- Throughout the music video Amy Winhouse lip synchs to the camera.
- Many of the shots used are close up, side views and mid shots.
- Cut are quick and go with the beat of the music.
- Many instruments are used like saxophone and guitars.
- She changes her oufits alot in the music video.
Set in one location a house, however is set in different room of the house.
All this will help us do our own music video as we are using instruments in our like a saxophone. We are using a little bit of lip synching, not for the whole video like Amy Winehouse does. Alos we will use only two locations for our music video so we will be keeping it to a minimum like Amy Winehouse. (Park and studio (classroom)
.
Also on the analysis of Cd and website in Flickr on the right hand side you can go into the sets so you can see all the cds i have analysed and can also see how this will help me do my own ones.
